Many films and TV series have been made in this area of the highlands, the most famous Outlander, The Crown, Skyfall and Harry Potter.
Locations for Outlander include The Highland Folk Park at Newtonmore where the replica 18th century crofts were shown when Claire joins Dougal and his followers on their task to collect rent from the clans tenants. Culloden Battlefield where the infamous rout of the Jacobites actually took place and Clava Cairns are also near Inverness. One of the most sacred historic sites in Scotland, the mystical Clava Cairns is a Bronze Age cemetery complex. Tucked away in a beautiful woodland setting near Inverness, the captivating complex has become a bucket list tourist site for fans of the TV series Outlander. The three prominent cairns form lines aligned with the winter solstice and show remnants of forgotten beliefs carved into the stones. So, for those looking to explore this atmospheric site, the Clava Cairns walk is majestic.
Inverness was the beautiful Highland city where Claire and Frank had their second honeymoon and take a cruise on the waters of Loch Ness. In the 18th century Claire meets the Loch Ness Monster (referred to as a water horse in the novel).
Loch Ness is also the setting for the film The Waterhorse - Legend of the Deep, an enchanting story about its most mysterious inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster. There is an excellent Visitors Centre in Drumnadrochit and from nearby you can take a short cruise to Urquhart Castle which wasn't used as a filming location, but it's worth adding to your Outlander Scotland tour because it's historically tied to the real-life Jacobite uprising and is featured in a memorable scene from the books.
The Great Glen is where Claire and Jamie rode after their wedding and is also features in the Harry Potter movies - the Glenfinnian Viaduct. Driving through this deep carved glen feels like you are entering a secret part of Scotland. Scenes from Skyfall were also filmed here, in the the shadow of Buachaille Etive Mor. Ian Fleming owed a family home in Glen Coe.
One of the leading locations in series 4 of The Crown was Ardverike House at Loch Laggan, which stood in for the exterior of Balmoral Castle.
All these sites are within an hours drive of our Cottage, and if you are travelling from Edinburgh or Glasgow it makes a great stopping point to explore these area.
Other sites include Glen Afric the inspiration for Brave, Clachaig Inn - Harry Potter, Traitors Series 2 (UK) Ardross Castle north of Inverness and This Farming Life, the Llamas in Newtonmore.
